Cataract

CATARACT.. Located midway between Sparta and Black River Falls, borders on Dustin and Soper creeks that feed into Big Creek, and on to the Black River. Both tributaries are utilized for trout fishing. The Mill Pond, formed by damming Dustin Creek, provides the community with a swimming and picnic area. There are also a number of public hunting areas in the community.

Cataract is surrounded by gently rolling farmland with many wooded areas that are home to deer and wild turkeys. The surrounding area contains many farms, with herds of Holstein cattle and fields of corn.

The Cataract Sportsmen’s Club has called Cataract home for more than 50 years. The club stocks area creeks with fish, has made substantial contributions to wildlife habitat areas, maintains the Mill Pond Park, and a hiking trail that provides access to miles of additional public trails. Funded entirely by donations, the CSC supports the development of facilities to enhance the environment and welcome hunters, fishermen and outdoor enthusiasts to the area.

Each fall, the Sunday after Labor Day, the Cataract Sportsmen’s Club holds its biggest fundraiser, annual field day at the club grounds, just a block east of Hwy. 27.

Cataract traces its beginnings to being a stagecoach stop on the Western Enterprise stage line that operated between Sparta and Black River Falls. The line operated over a road that is now State Highway 27.

Cashton

CASHTON.... sits atop some of the most scenic hills in southwestern Wisconsin. It’s home to the largest Amish community in Wisconsin.

Cashton marked the spot of an old Native American trail that led westward to the Mississippi River, serving as a trading post and rest stop for stagecoaches heading north to Sparta and other cities. Highways 27 and 33 provide easy access to the Cashton area.

Cashton boasts a cheese factory, several stores featuring Amish and Ocooch Mountain artisans, a quilt shop and a cheese house.

Enjoy the peace and quiet of small town America as you travel in Cashton. Front Street takes you on a ride through historic downtown Cashton. Great restaurants offer down-home cooking for a hearty breakfast, lunch & dinner.

A drive north on County U will take you past St. Mary’s Ridge Church, one of the area’s oldest churches. It also offers glimpses of Amish farms, and beautiful panoramic views. Continue traveling on County U and you will find yourself in the Village of Norwalk.

Highway 33 East offers a great tour of Amish country — horse-drawn plows, corn-shock stacking, and lots of wildlife as you meander through the valley.

The Amish post small signs advertising their ware — Rugs, bakery goods, furniture, wooden toys, and maple syrup. They are not open for business on Sundays.

Watch for slow moving horse-drawn buggies as you travel these roads. Amish homes are usually painted white and may have a windmill.

Continue east on Highway 33 and you will come to the Village of Ontario, and to Wildcat Mountain State Park.

Contact the village office at 608-654-7828 for information.
