LEON is located 4 miles south
of Sparta on Hwy 27S. Leon is a small community with the biggest
festival in August – LEON GATORFEST. The GATORFEST celebration started
6 years ago because an article in USA Today mistakenly stated Leon, WI
had an alligator problem. Enterprising folks in Leon decided since it
said so in USA Today….we would have alligators. The two-day fun festival
is the 4th weekend in August (August 23-24,2008) and
includes a Basket Softball tournament (yes, teams use plastic laundry
baskets instead of ball gloves); a stand still parade (as Leon is too
small to have a parade that moves), craft show, live music, live reptile
exhibits, games for the kids and plenty of good food! For specific
information and times, contact 608.269.4123.
Leon is also home to the Leon
Community Center, a school building purchased by five Leon clubs (Gatorfest,
Leon Valley Snowmobile Riders, Leon LiveWires 4-H, Leon 1st
Responders and Leon Garden Club) and rented for receptions, meetings,
showers, karate classes, adult day care and Leon Little Learners (a
pre-school program). For rental information, call 608.269.8463.
