The "Heart" of the
Elroy-Sparta State Trail

Wilton is a small picturesque farming community located at the headwaters of the Kickapoo River and at the middle of the
Elroy-Sparta State Bike Trail.

Wilton is surrounded by gentle rolling hills that lend the area charm all its own.  The scenery is beautiful, and recreation abounds - no matter what the season.

        Bike Trail At Wilton

In 1860, the residents of Wilton joined together to ensure their future.  The railroad was looking to run a line from Baraboo to Sparta, and the villages knew the importance of having the line run through their town.  Wilton and several other communities lobbied with success.  The railroad line opened on September 25, 1873, making stops in Elroy, Kendall, Wilton, Norwalk and Sparta.  Before long, six passenger trails and untold numbers of freight cars rumbled through Wilton on a daily basis. .

Two campgrounds provide visitors with outdoor accommodations within biking distance of the Elroy-Sparta State Trail. Trail passes can be bought in town, where you'll find shops, restaurants and other accommodations to serve you.

Stop by our Visitor's Center located in the caboose next to the bike trail.

If you visit for a day, a week, or longer, you will know why Wilton is so special to so many.  Welcome to
Wilton "heart of the trail,
heart of Monroe County"
